About the program
After 6 years offering this weekly program at Fort Massey United Church in south end Halifax we are seeing up to 25 dancers participating: People living with a neurological condition, their spouses/partners or a friend plus volunteers, learning, dancing and socializing. They experience many benefits including less symptoms, more mobility, better balance and new friendships and peer support. Each class (45 minutes) starts with a dance supporting warm-up. We break for tea and refreshments (25 minutes) before taking to the dance floor again for open practice (20 minutes).
Tea & Tango is a Charter member of Dance for PD Network of Canada, and is recommended by local neurologists, nurses, therapists and stakeholders with strong research backing up dance (movement to music) as the most powerful form of brain activation.
One of the many strengths of this program is that whether you have a neurological condition or are a partner/friend or a volunteer you are treated equally as tango dance students in a dance class that is slower in pace considering age and individual abilities. Everyone is learning a new language - tango that is - within the support of a community. Dance is a powerful tool to prevent brain aging, whether you live with or without a neurological condition - and it is a beautiful way to connect with a partner. Singles and couples are welcome, no partner necessary.
